About the Sentence Counter

A sentence counter tells you how many sentences your text contains, which is useful for essays, summaries and any writing with a sentence limit.

Sentences are detected by their ending punctuation: a period, question mark or exclamation mark closes one sentence and starts the next.

Alongside the sentence total you get word and paragraph counts plus the average words and characters per sentence, so you can spot sentences that run too long.

Key features

  • Average characters per sentence
  • Runs entirely in your browser

Frequently asked questions

How is a sentence counted?
Sentences are split on terminal punctuation - a period, question mark or exclamation mark. A run of text ending in one of those marks counts as a sentence.
Does an abbreviation like Mr. count as a sentence?
Periods inside abbreviations can be counted as sentence ends, so counts may be slightly high for text with many abbreviations. The count is a close estimate.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, so your text never leaves your device.
