About the Teacher Studio

Teacher Studio is a browser workspace built for live and recorded teaching. Open a PDF or a PowerPoint file, annotate it with a pen, highlighter, shapes and text boxes, and present the page in fullscreen while you share that tab in Google Meet, Zoom or any other meeting tool. There is no account, no upload and no installation: the document is read locally and every stroke stays in your browser.

Annotations are stored in document-relative coordinates, separately from the original file. That means a highlight drawn at 150% zoom still sits on the same sentence when a student opens the exported PDF, and the source file is never modified. You can close the tab, come back later and keep editing the same strokes rather than starting again.

Whiteboards are the second half of the workspace. Start from a blank, dotted or grid board, or from a flowchart, mind-map or code-explanation template, draw freehand with mouse, touch or stylus pressure, add shapes and labels, and keep several boards in one lesson. Boards autosave to IndexedDB and can be exported as PDF, PNG or JPEG.

Annotated PDF exports preserve original pages and selectable source text, with vector drawings added on top. Annotation text that needs a browser font, such as Hindi, is embedded as an image label rather than dropped. PowerPoint import is a basic reconstruction, not a native renderer: basic text boxes, rectangles and pictures are recreated, but mixed text formatting, complex shapes, themes, animations, SmartArt and charts may not match the original. For accurate slide layout, export the presentation as PDF in your presentation software and open that PDF here. The original file is never changed.

Lessons are saved as editable .teacherstudio project files. A project can either reference the original document by name or bundle it inside, so a lesson can move between devices without a server. Everything is stored in this browser only, so export the project file before clearing site data or switching computers.

Key features

  • PDF viewer with page thumbnails, page jump, zoom and fit-to-width or fit-to-page
  • Pen, highlighter, line, arrow, rectangle, ellipse and text annotations
  • Selection and movement of annotations, plus undo and redo
  • Pressure-aware freehand drawing with mouse, touch or stylus
  • PowerPoint import that rebuilds slide geometry, text and pictures with stated limits
  • Whiteboard with white, yellow and dark backgrounds and plain, dotted or grid patterns
  • Six ready templates: blank, dotted, grid, flowchart, mind map and code explanation
  • Multiple boards per lesson with duplicate, rename and delete
  • Autosave to IndexedDB with visible Saving, Saved and save-failed states
  • Annotated PDF export that keeps the original pages and selectable text
  • Whiteboard export to PDF, PNG and JPEG
  • Versioned .teacherstudio project export and import, with an optional bundled document
  • Fullscreen teaching mode that hides site chrome and keeps the annotation toolbar
  • Keyboard shortcuts, accessible labels and a responsive layout for tablets

How to use

  1. 1Start from the dashboard: create a whiteboard from a template, open a PDF, or import a PPTX presentation.
  2. 2Choose a drawing tool and colour. Press V, P, H, T, L, A, R, O or E to switch tools, G to pan a zoomed page, and Ctrl+Z or Ctrl+Shift+Z for undo and redo. Eraser removes whole annotations, not individual pixels.
  3. 3For documents, move between pages with the arrow controls or the page number box, and open the thumbnail rail to jump further.
  4. 4Press Teaching mode to go fullscreen, then share this browser tab in Google Meet so students see the same canvas.
  5. 5Open Export to download an annotated PDF, whiteboard PDF, PNG or JPEG, or to save an editable .teacherstudio project file.
  6. 6Use Import project on the dashboard to restore a saved lesson; if the original document was not bundled, locate the file when asked.

Examples

Annotate a worksheet during a live class
Input: A maths worksheet PDF and a tablet stylus
Output: A solved worksheet PDF with handwritten working drawn over each question

The exported file keeps the original vector text, so students can still copy question numbers.

Present a slide deck with notes
Input: A 20-slide PPTX lesson deck
Output: Annotated slides exported as a PDF handout

Slide geometry and text are rebuilt; animations and SmartArt are listed as unsupported instead of silently missing.

Explain an algorithm on a board
Input: The code explanation template
Output: A PNG screenshot of the board for the class group

Use the flowchart or mind-map template when the explanation is structural rather than linear.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs or presentations uploaded anywhere?
No. Files are read with the browser's own File API, rendered locally with PDF.js, and stored in this browser's IndexedDB. Nothing is sent to a server, and no account is required.
Does the exported PDF contain a screenshot?
No. Annotated PDFs are created by drawing vector shapes onto the original PDF pages with pdf-lib, so the page count, page size, rotation and selectable text are unchanged. Only the slide artwork of an imported PPTX is embedded as a page image, because there is no native PowerPoint renderer in the browser.
How faithful is the PowerPoint rendering?
Direct PPTX import is approximate: basic text boxes, rectangle geometry and pictures are reconstructed. Mixed formatting, complex shapes, themes, fonts, charts, SmartArt and animations may be missing or differ. For a faithful teaching document, export the deck as PDF in PowerPoint or LibreOffice first, then annotate that PDF.
Can I keep annotating a lesson later?
Yes. Each lesson is stored locally and autosaved as you draw, so reopening it restores the same annotations in an editable form. Export a .teacherstudio file if you need a portable copy.
Do annotations stay aligned when I zoom?
Yes. Objects are stored as normalised coordinates inside the page box with stroke widths in PDF points, so zooming, resizing the window and exporting all use the same geometry.
Can students see my annotations in Google Meet?
Share this browser tab or window in the meeting. Teacher Studio cannot control the meeting software, but anything visible in the shared tab, including fullscreen teaching mode, is visible to students.
What happens if browser storage is full?
Saving stops and the workspace shows a clear error. Export the project file, delete lessons you no longer need, and the editor keeps working in memory until you reload.
Does it work offline?
Drawing and local editing can continue offline after the workspace has loaded. PDF, presentation and export libraries load on demand, so open the formats and export options you need while online first. Offline reopening of the website is not guaranteed.
