About the Unlock PDF
Unlock PDF removes password encryption only when you provide the correct user or owner password. It does not crack, guess, recover, or bypass an unknown password, and it must be used only on a document you own or have explicit permission to unlock.
The tool loads QPDF compiled to WebAssembly for this workflow and performs decryption inside the browser tab. The PDF and password are not uploaded, and the password field is cleared immediately after a successful result is verified.
QPDF removes the encryption layer without rebuilding pages as screenshots. Selectable text, vector artwork, links, and page dimensions are preserved rather than rasterized, although unsupported encryption or a damaged PDF can still prevent a result.
After success, the workspace verifies the page count and renders a first-page result preview with output size and processing time. Nothing downloads automatically: you review the result, choose a filename, and explicitly select Download unlocked PDF. Large files remain limited by available device and browser memory.

Frequently asked questions
- Can this recover or crack a forgotten PDF password?
- No. There is no password guessing, cracking, recovery, or bypass. A correct user or owner password is required.
- Are the PDF and password uploaded?
- No. QPDF WebAssembly processes them in the browser tab, and the password field is cleared after successful verification.
- Does unlocking rasterize the document or reduce page quality?
- No. QPDF removes encryption while preserving selectable text, vector content, links, and page dimensions rather than rendering page images.
- Why might the correct password still fail?
- The PDF may be damaged, use unsupported encryption, or require a different owner password. Passwords are also case-sensitive.
- Can I unlock a PDF that belongs to someone else?
- Only when you have explicit permission from the owner. The workspace requires an ownership or authorization confirmation before it enables unlocking.
- What limits large files?
- The PDF, QPDF WebAssembly runtime, decrypted bytes, verification data, and preview all use local device memory. Very large or complex files can exceed browser or device limits.
