PNG is lossless and supports transparency. JPG is smaller for photos but cannot preserve transparency. WebP usually balances size and quality.

About the Online Paint

Online Paint is a layered drawing and lightweight image-editing workspace that runs entirely in your browser. Sketch with pencil, marker, calligraphy or spray brushes; erase, flood-fill or sample colours; add text; and draw lines, arrows, polygons, rectangles, rounded rectangles, circles and ellipses.

Import a browser-readable image as a new layer, keep elements separated across multiple visible layers, and use selection tools to move, scale, delete or crop a selected area. Canvas-level controls can resize, rotate or flip the complete document, while zoom and pan help with detailed work without changing the exported pixel dimensions.

Choose an exact canvas size and background, work in a focused full-screen mode, and save a local browser draft when you need to continue later. Finished artwork can be exported as lossless or transparent PNG, photo-friendly JPG, or WebP with adjustable quality and a custom file name.

Your images, brush strokes and drafts stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded to ToolsOnDuty, but browser storage is limited, so important work should also be downloaded as an image rather than relying only on a saved draft.

How to use

  1. 1Set the canvas width, height and background, or import an image to place it on a new fitted layer.
  2. 2Choose a layer, then select a brush, shape, fill, text, eraser or eyedropper tool. Adjust colour, size, opacity and filled-shape mode before drawing.
  3. 3Use Select to mark an area and move, grow, shrink, delete or crop it. Use Pan and Zoom when you need to navigate the canvas without editing the artwork.
  4. 4Add, duplicate, hide or reorder layers to keep parts of the composition separate. Use undo and redo while working on the active layer.
  5. 5Use full-screen mode for a larger canvas; the background picker, essential drawing controls, zoom and download actions remain available.
  6. 6Enter a file name, choose transparent PNG or JPG/WebP quality when relevant, then download the required format. Keep a downloaded copy even if you also save a local draft.

Examples

Create a quick sketch
Input: Pen strokes, shapes and colours on the canvas
Output: PNG drawing

Undo or redo edits, then download the finished canvas as an image.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The canvas supports pointer and touch input, so you can draw with a finger or compatible stylus. A larger screen is more comfortable for detailed layer and selection work.
Which export format should I choose?
Use PNG for lossless artwork, sharp interface graphics or transparency. Use JPG for photographs when transparency is not needed. WebP usually offers a useful balance between quality and file size. JPG and WebP quality can be adjusted before export.
What is the difference between zooming and resizing the canvas?
Zoom only changes how large the canvas appears while editing and does not change the exported pixels. Resize changes the actual document dimensions and scales every layer to the new width and height, which can alter proportions if the aspect ratio changes.
How do layers work?
Each layer has its own transparent canvas. You can add, duplicate, hide, reorder or delete layers, while the downloaded image combines all visible layers over the selected background. At least one layer is always retained.
Can I continue editing later?
Use Save draft to store the canvas and layers in this browser, then Load draft on the same device and browser. Browser storage is limited and may be cleared, so download important artwork as well. Drafts do not sync between devices.
Can I export with a transparent background?
Yes. Enable Transparent PNG background before downloading PNG. JPG cannot contain transparent pixels, and JPG or WebP exports use the selected solid canvas background.
What happens when I import an image?
The image is fitted inside the current canvas without being enlarged beyond its original size, centred, and added as a new layer. The source file remains on your device.
Does full-screen mode remove any drawing controls?
Full-screen mode hides document setup, layers and detailed export settings to maximise the canvas, but keeps drawing tools, colours, brush settings, background colour, zoom, undo, redo, downloads and the exit control available.
Is my drawing uploaded anywhere?
No. Imported images, drawing operations, drafts and exports are processed locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to ToolsOnDuty.
