About the Repair & Validate PDF

Repair & Validate PDF uses QPDF to inspect PDF syntax, cross-reference tables, object streams and other structural signals. It captures the engine diagnostics instead of showing a generic success message.

The repair pass rewrites recoverable document structure, regenerates object streams and creates a separate output. A fresh QPDF check and PDF.js page test then verify that the rebuilt file opens and contains readable pages.

A healthy PDF can also be normalized into a clean rewritten copy. If warnings remain, the result is labeled accordingly and the source/output diagnostic logs stay available for review.

Repair cannot recreate bytes that are missing or overwritten. Digital signatures become invalid after rewriting, and damaged forms, attachments, bookmarks, scripts or page content may not survive. Always inspect the complete repaired document.

Key features

  • QPDF syntax, stream and cross-reference validation
  • Recoverable xref, trailer and object-stream reconstruction
  • Encrypted input support through the authorized local unlock flow
  • Source and repaired-output diagnostic reports
  • Fresh QPDF and PDF.js output verification
  • First-page source and repaired previews
  • Page count, size, duration and status summary
  • Custom filename and explicit download
  • Private local WebAssembly processing

How to use

  1. 1Choose a PDF that is damaged, unreliable or needs structural validation.
  2. 2If it is encrypted, provide the known password and confirm permission in the local unlock dialog.
  3. 3Review whether the standard page parser can currently read the source.
  4. 4Select Validate & repair PDF and wait for the QPDF check, rewrite and verification stages.
  5. 5Review the final status, size, page count, preview and QPDF diagnostics.
  6. 6Download the repaired copy and inspect every page plus any forms, links, attachments or bookmarks you rely on.

Examples

Recover a broken scanned report
Input: PDF with a damaged cross-reference table but intact page streams
Output: Rebuilt PDF that passes a fresh structural and page-level check

Inspect every page because structural recovery cannot prove that all original content survived.

Validate an archive before delivery
Input: Readable PDF with uncertain internal warnings
Output: Normalized copy plus source and output QPDF diagnostics

Existing digital signatures are invalidated by any rewrite.

Frequently asked questions

What PDF problems can QPDF repair?
It can recover many damaged cross-reference tables, trailers, object offsets and structural inconsistencies when the required objects and streams still exist.
Can it recover missing page content?
No. No repair tool can reconstruct bytes or objects that were deleted, overwritten or never saved.
Will a healthy PDF change?
Yes. Validation creates a normalized rewritten copy. Visible pages should remain equivalent, but internal object ordering and file size can change.
Are digital signatures preserved?
No. Rewriting a PDF changes its bytes and invalidates existing digital signatures. The tool displays this warning before download.
Are forms, bookmarks and attachments guaranteed?
No. QPDF preserves recoverable structure, but damaged advanced features may remain incomplete. Review the complete result.
Can it repair a password-protected PDF?
Yes, when you know the password and have authorization. Decryption happens locally before structural validation.
Are files uploaded?
No. QPDF WebAssembly, validation, rewriting, previews and download preparation run in the current browser tab.
